He became an associate member of the Royal British Society of Sculptors in 2009.

The writer and curator Ann Elliot wrote of Ian’s work for the ‘Sculpture: a Spectator Sport’ exhibition at Bryanston School in 2003: ‘Just as the Surrealist sculptors of the early 20th century assaulted the senses, Ian Middleton’s sculptures challenge the viewer to find out what’s going on. Whilst his work may seem ‘the stuff that dreams are made of’, it also poses questions........ Ian always leaves us with something to work out. There are lots of ways you can start with the work and move out from there. It’s very enigmatic.’
